Who Wears Rolex Sea-Dweller?

Introduced in the 1960s, the Rolex Seadweller was created as a tool for saturation divers. Its very first version tripled the already impressive water resistance of the Submariner, and today, the most advanced Seadweller can handle depths up to 12,800 feet.

In its more than 50-year history, the Seadweller not just evolved as an impressively engineered diver’s watch, but also as a luxury timepiece. Its ruggedly handsome look has earned fans outside the diving sport that many even pull it off as an everyday wearer, including celebrities.

The 40mm Seadweller shares many similarities with the Rolex Submariner — with the addition of the helium escape valve, it boasts an incredible depth rating of up to 4,000 feet.

It also features an aluminum bezel and a pre-Maxi dial, giving it a slimmer profile that fits easily under the cuff. In 2008, Rolex took the Seadweller to another level with the Deepsea a robust 44 mm version that tripled its depth rating to 12,800 feet.

This feat was the result of several engineering marvels: a 5mm thick sapphire crystal, a titanium caseback and a Ringlock system that enables the watch to resist massive pressure. All these allow the Deepsea to retain its timeless case design despite the colossal depth rating. In 2014, Rolex introduced a special version of the Deepsea Seadweller. The D-Blue commemorates director James Cameron’s historic dive to the Mariana Trench, with its gradient blue to black dial.

Two years prior, James Cameron became the first person to dive to the deepest oceanic trench on Earth. To celebrate this momentous occasion, Rolex released the D-Blue dial Deepsea, whose dial mimics the way light changes as one dives deeper into the ocean. The Seadweller celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2017 with an all-new reference.

The 126600 introduced striking novelties. It became the first Seadweller to come in a 43mm case; and to feature a Cyclops lens over the date. Yet, it also featured a charming nod to the past with its red Seadweller writing, a subtle reference to the model’s origins.
