Collectors with a soft spot for neo vintage design will find plenty to admire in Alpina’s latest release. The new Alpiner Extreme Automatic California distils the spirit of the 1950s and 60s into a compact 39 × 40.5 mm case. Its most striking feature, the “California” dial with half Roman and half Arabic numerals, returns in two sandblasted dial colors: a sunburst brown and orange evoking sunsets over the Pacific, and a pine green dégradé inspired by the alpine forests that define the brand’s heritage.
The California dial remains one of watchmaking’s great eccentricities, born between the wars, misinterpreted ever since, and quietly beloved by connoisseurs. Its asymmetrical numeral layout, here rendered in bold beige lume, offers both character and legibility.
Behind the sapphire backed steel case beats Alpina’s reliable AL 525 automatic calibre, complete with a 38 hour power reserve and date at 3 o’clock. The vertically brushed bezel, polished chamfers and integrated rubber strap with folding clasp complete a package that bridges vintage soul and contemporary capability, a watch for those who appreciate history but wear it in motion.
