History of Cuervo y Sobrinos
Cuervo y Sobrinos was established in 1882 in Havana, Cuba, by Don Ramón Cuervo as a small jewelry and watchmaking shop. As the business flourished, Cuervo brought his nephews (the “Sobrinos” in the brand name, meaning “nephews” in Spanish) into the business, thus creating the iconic brand name Cuervo y Sobrinos.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Havana was a vibrant city attracting visitors worldwide. Cuervo y Sobrinos capitalized on this by offering timepieces that combined European watchmaking techniques with a distinctive Latin flair, gaining popularity among locals and international clients, including celebrities.
The Cuban Revolution in 1959 led to the nationalization of many businesses, including Cuervo y Sobrinos. The original store in Havana was closed, and the brand disappeared from the international scene.
In the late 1990s, Swiss entrepreneurs revived the brand, honoring its heritage and Cuban roots. They re-established the company in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, blending traditional Swiss watchmaking expertise with the distinctive style of the original Cuervo y Sobrinos timepieces.
