The Slim d’Hermès Hippocampe marks a new chapter in the maison’s metiers d’arts story, using its quietly modern silhouette as a stage for exceptional savoir faire. This limited series combines engraving with leather marquetry to animate a stylised seahorse first imagined by London illustrator Stuart Patience.
To transpose the seahorse to dial scale, the engraver begins by mapping its outline and drawing out its curves with a selection of precision tools. The marquetry artisan then prepares ultra thin calfskin, trimmed to just half a millimetre, before cutting it into tiny coloured elements. Each fragment is placed by hand, slotting into the engraved relief until the seahorse gradually emerges with texture and depth.
The result sits within a 39.5 mm white gold case housing the ultra slim H1950 self winding movement, visible through a sapphire caseback that reveals its refined finishes and signature H motif. A béton or perle Swift calfskin strap underscores Hermès leather expertise, completing two vivid interpretations offered in numbered editions of only twenty four pieces.
